The annual Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup Basketball Championship tournament kicked off at the Moi Air Base Gymnasium, Nairobi on Monday, 27 August 2018.
The week long tournament brings together 12 teams from various KDF formations which seek to take home the coveted trophy won by Engineers Brigade in 2017. The teams include Moi Air Base, Laikipia Air Base, Ranger Regiment, Kahawa Garrison, 6 Brigade, Armour, Artillery Brigade, Nairobi, 2 Brigade and Kenya Navy.
The tournament was officially opened by the Base Commander Moi Air Base Brigadier Peter Githinji. In his opening speech, the Commander challenged the players to display their best skills and maintain the highest levels of sportsmanship and discipline. He highlighted the importance of the tournament in the identification of talent within KDF, which is known to produce some of the crème of players within the country. “I urge you to give your best and I hope those who will give it all will conquer”, he said.
The Commander Engineers Brigade,who is also the Defence Forces Basketball Association Chairman, Brigadier Joseph Ouda congratulated the players particularly the ones who played for Ulinzi Warriors, for the exemplary play they had continued to display, urging them to take the opportunity to better themselves.
The games began with an exciting Pool A clash between defending champions the Engineers Brigade and 2017 runners up Moi Air Base, with the Engineers Brigade again proving the mightier in a 48-41 win. Other matches of the day saw Laikipia Air Base beat Kenya Navy 55-41 in Pool B while the Pool A game between the Ranger Regiment and Armoured Brigade was forced to extra time, with Rangers snatching a 56-51 victory.
The teams are divided into two pools, with the group games set to continue to day four,(4)s where the quarter finals will take place. The semi- finals and the crowing of the champions will take place on Friday, 31 August 2018.
