The second edition of the Commander Kenya Navy Golf Championship Cup was held on Saturday 8 September 2018 at the Mombasa Sports Golf Club.

The championship was competitive in all categories. In the military category Major General Charles Owino won the championship, Brigadier C Kahariri came in second place while KDF Golf Association Captain, Colonel Mwololo was third.

The idea to hold the championships is the brain child of the KDF golf association patron Major General Charles Owino who saw the need to revive golf as a competitive sport within the military. Major General Owino noted that in comparison to other sports disciplines, the sport had dwindled along the way due to lack of mentorship, sponsorship and the notion that it is a rich man’s game. This brought up the need to demystify that notion, hence its reintroduction. Major General Owino also thanked the Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe for his support to the association and the sport.

Deputy Commander Kenya Navy Brigadier Kahariri who represented the Commander Kenya Navy welcomed all the new players onboard and challenged them to continue encouraging others. He noted that this year championship registered a high number of participants which was a positive step in the progress of the sport.  He urged KDF personnel to familiarize with the sport it was an avenue to explore a new challenge.

The members of the KDF golf association are military officers from the Kenya Army, the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Navy and members of the public. In the last three years the association has mentored service members and children to take up the sport.

These championships bring together golfers from KDF golf association and other golf clubs within the region. This year’s edition recorded an increased number of golfers than the previous one. This event will be followed by Commander Kenya Army Golf Championship Cup, which will take place on 13 October 2018 at Gilgil while the last event in the association’s calendar will be the Chief of Defence Forces Championship cup to be held in December 2018.
