A Blood Donation Drive by the Kenya Defence Forces for the year 2018 climaxed on Wednesday, 19 August 2018 as donations took place at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi. The drive, which is in tandem with the annual National Blood Donation Drive, has been underway across all KDF Units and Formations within Nairobi County and is set to spread to every other KDF Unit across the country.

The campaign themed “Life for Life”, which points to the importance of saving lives by donating blood, has so far been able to attract not just military personnel but also civilian staff at the Ministry of Defence, KDF family members amongst other Kenyans.

The exercise is particularly vital to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) which needs to have a constant supply of blood within the KDF blood bank which serves numerous patients. This follows the approval by the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Samson Mwathethe, to have a KDF blood transfusion centre at the DFMH, Nairobi.

The coordinator of the blood drive, Major Robert Gatata, while thanking the numerous donors and urging many more to turn up for the ongoing campaign, said that the huge turnout of donors will go a long way in saving the lives of not just soldiers but Kenyans in general. He added that it is vital for KDF to enhance a culture of blood donation to ensure sustainability.

Major Gatata expressed gratitude to the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service for partnering with KDF and providing a team of medics who continue to assist in the exercise. He further thanked the KDF for providing logistical and moral support.

Among those present during the blood donation at the Defence Headquarters included the Commandant Defence Headquarters Camp Admin Unit (DHQ CAU), the Commanding Officer DHQ CAU, Senior Officers, Officers, Service Members and the Civilian Staff.
