His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander -in -Chief of Kenya Defence Forces Hon.Uhuru Kenyatta led thousands of Kenyans in celebrations of Mashujaa Day at Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday, 20 October 2018.
Thousands of Kenyans from all walks of life trooped into the well -decorated Bukhungu Stadium to celebrate Mashujaa day, which is also known as Heroes’ Day and is observed as a public holiday to collectively honour all those who contributed immensely to the struggle for freedom in Kenya.
The president on his arrival, inspected the Guard of honour mounted by the 20 Para Battalion of Gilgil supported by the platoons from Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Navy. The Guard of honour was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Abdi Shune Galgalo of 20th Parachute Battalion.
After the inspection of the Guard of honour, contingent from several units of Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, Kenya wildlife Service, the Kenya Forest Service, National Youth Service, the County Council of Kakamega, and the Kenya Scouts Association matched past the dais.
Kenya Air Force feted the celebrations by entertaining guests by their air navigation prowess with a fly past of the fighters jet. Different groups also performed in the celebrations with heroic messages.
Speaking during the colourful event, the president expressed his gratitude for the honour given in leading Kenyans into marking Mashujaa day, a national day to reflect upon, appreciate and celebrate Kenyan’s sang and unsung heroes and heroines.
“The Kenya Defence Forces are serving us bravely in Somalia as part of an African Union Force that is fighting terrorists to bring peace to our region. We recognize the hardships of war, and the sacrifices, in blood and life, that they have made: we thank them for their service” the president said.
He further noted that, we are staying the course in Somalia alongside our region and the International community, because we know that as long as Somalia is under assault from terrorists, Kenya will not be safe.
“For the men and women lured into terrorism against our people and our national, I advise them to read the history of Kenyans to understand that Kenya cannot be defeated because it’s children fought hard for our freedom and we will never allow it to be destroyed by any person or group “added the president.
Finally, the president concluded his speech by underscoring the “POWER OF HOPE”. “Hope, dear Kenyans, is what allows us to capture greatness. Let us hope in each other’s goodness and potential to be great so that our efforts may be joined in building a Nation worthy of our long journey, we have just started “.
Among the present guests in the colourful event were, His excellency the President of Namibia Hage Geingob, Her Excellency the first lady of Namibia Monica Geingos, Her Excellency the first Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Deputy president Hon. William Ruto, Senior Military officers among other top government officials.
