On 15 January 2019 the Cabinet Secretary for Defence (CS) Ambassador Raychelle Omamo officially launched a two day Kenya Defence Forces capacity development workshop on procurement of works and construction management at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Nairobi.

The Workshop dubbed ‘develop competencies in the best practices in Procurement, construction, contract management of works and related services,’ was attended by more than 68 participants drawn from the Defence Headquarters both military and civilian staff. The programme is managed by the National Construction Authority (NCA), which is a Government entity charged with the responsibility to oversee the construction industry and coordinate its development so as to ensure an effective and sustainable construction industry.

Speaking during the opening of the workshop, the Cabinet Secretary thanked the participants for finding time to attend the workshop and encouraged participants to ensure that they come out with knowledge and competence in order to work well. “Out of the workshop, ensure that you come out equipped with new skills that will ease your work,” she said.

The CS emphasized the need to inculcate a sense of integrity in the management of projects and procurement of works, goods and services.  “The Ministry of Defence should be a centre of competence in terms of the use of right tools and right system,” added the CS.

The Permanent Secretary for Defence Mr. Saitoti Torome, while presenting the certificates to the participants on the closing day, congratulated them and requested them to put into practice whatever they had learned. “We need to have proper projects management and ensure project are completed on time,” the PS noted.

Executive Director, National Construction Authority (NCA) Mr. Moris Aketch expressed his gratitude to the Defence Cabinet Secretary and the Kenya Defence Forces at large for good initiative in training on procurement of workshop construction management.

At the closure of the seminar, the participants came up with workshop outcomes which will enable them manage procurement of works and construction better.

Also in attendance during the opening and the closing session were Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel and Logistics Major General Fatuma Ahmed, Director of Communications for Defence Mr. Bogita Ongeri among others.
