On 10 April 2019, the Principal Secretary (PS) for Defence Mr. Torome Saitoti presided over a multi-agency consultative forum on science and technology, organised by the Kenya Space Agency at a Nairobi hotel.
This comes barely three weeks after the Cabinet Secretary for Defence ambassador Raychelle Omamo presided over a similar function themed, ‘the use of Earth Observation and Geospatial Data for development.’ Wednesday’s forum was geared towards establishing a framework of collaboration and partnerships for capacity development in astronomy, space, weather, satellite, manufacturing and launch systems, remote sensing and its related applications.
In his address, Mr. Torome Saitoti said that Kenya has been at the forefront in promoting and developing technologies that impact the lives of citizens and the well-being of humanity in the region which is evidenced by the various Government departments, research institutions, universities and private sector entities currently engaged in space-related activities.
The PS lauded the Kenya Space Agency for its efforts since inception, “I am happy to announce that the Agency is already delivering on its obligation by focusing on provision of Earth Observation data and applications, as well as developing capacity in space science and technology disciplines through training opportunities and providing support to Kenyan institutions,” he said, adding that Kenya is keen on building synergies with both local and international partners.Furthermore, he applauded the widely celebrated deployment of the First Kenyan University Nano-Satellite on 11th May 2018 from the International Space Station.
The forum was attended by among others, the Italian Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Amb Alberto Pieri, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors Kenya Space Agency, Major General (Rtd) James Aruasa, Board Members of the Kenya Space Agency, Representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies and local Universities.
