Auxiliary Bishop of Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi Rt. Rev David Kamau ready for a holy entrance of the newly constructed St Raphael Catholic church at Defence Forces Memorial Hospital, Nairobi on 17 May 2019.

The Kenya Defence Forces Roman Catholic faithfuls, families and friends joined their counterparts in a solemn mass to consecrate and dedicate the newly built St. Raphael Catholic Church to God at the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) on 17 May 2019.

Rt. Rev David Kamau, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi presided over the ceremony whose chief guest was the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Defence Amb. Raychelle Omamo.

Amb. Raychelle Omamo lauded efforts of everyone who worked tirelessly to see that DFMH has the Lords’ sanctuary for soldiers, families and visitors, emphasizing the importance of a church within DFMH as not only serving as a place for worship but also providing counseling.

“DFMH provides comprehensive health care and now can also offer spiritual care to the soldiers and their families. This church will play a key role in meeting spiritual needs of the Kenya Defence Forces personnel,” she added.

Rt. Rev David Kamau said that since time immemorial, the Canon law required that a new church be solemnly consecrated, or at least dedicated to God by a blessing, before divine services could be held.

“I am going to perform various rites including blessing the church with holy water, anointing the walls with oil of chrism, burning of incense and lighting 12 candles to complete the whole process of consecration,” said Rt. Rev. Kamau.

The rite for the dedication of a church and an altar is rightly considered among the most solemn liturgical services in the Catholic Church that devote the edifice exclusively for sacred use.

Present during the event was the Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi, Service Commanders, GOC EastCom, Director of Medical Services, Commandant DFMH, Senior Military Officers, Apostolic Administrator Colonel (Fr) Benjamin Maswili, Officers, Service Members, clergy, families among other invited guests.
