Kenya Donates 5.8 Tons of Medical Supplies to Mozambique

The Kenya Government on Saturday, 18 May 2019 handed over 5.8 tons of medical supplies to the Government of the Republic of Mozambique. The donation was presented by Kenya Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Defence Amb Raychelle Omamo at the port of Maputo in Mozambique. Speaking during the event, the CS said there was need to strengthen the already existing cooperation and bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The effects of climate change are real as witnessed recently. Therefore, we need to improve cooperation between African countries to mitigate challenges that our respective countries may face from time to time. We need strong working relations between our defence forces,” Amb Raychelle Omamo said.

The 5.8 tons of medical supplies ferried by the Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) Jasiri while on a training cruise and a show of flag diplomacy, was handed over to the Mozambique Defence Minister Mr. Atanatio Salvador M’tumuke to assist those affected by the two cyclones, Cyclone Kenneth and Cyclone Idai.

Mozambique Defence Minister expressed his gratitude to the His Excellency Hon. President Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces and the people of Kenya for timely support expressed during the disaster that led to loss of lives and massive destruction of property in the Country.

Amb Omamo was accompanied by Defence Headquarters’ Chief of Logistics, Brigadier Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu, Kenya Defence Forces Senior Officers, Officers and Service Members.

In March this year, Kenya responded to the disaster in Mozambique by sending a team of medical doctors, a specialised Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Unit together with air support from the Kenya Air Force.
