The 9th African Air Chiefs Symposium 2019 (AACS) co-hosted by the Kenya Air Force (KAF) and U.S Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) officially opened in Nairobi on 26 August 2019.

The symposium themed “Promoting Multinational Policies and Procedures in Personnel Recovery” has attracted Air Chiefs form 35 African partner states.

While addressing the participants, Commander Kenya Air Force Major General Francis Ogolla welcomed the visiting Air Chiefs to Kenya and to the symposium in particular. “The symposium will provide us with the opportunity to interact, share and exchange ideas on how to improve our Air forces and our air power capabilities,” he said.

He further expounded on the force behind Kenya’s interest in developing and improving its Personnel Recovery capabilities.

General Jeff Lee Harrigian, Commander USAFE-AFAFRICA, said the momentum generated from African Partnership Flight program should fuel the discussion and provide an opportunity for strategic dialogue among African Air Chiefs to discuss common interests and foster cooperation.

The Chief Guest, Defence Cabinet Secretary Amb. Raychelle Omamo, expressed her appreciation to KAF for organizing such a forum that will provide new insights on solutions and recommend possible mitigation measures towards air challenges in Africa.

“I compliment the role Air Forces play in support of Civil Authorities especially in disaster and emergency situations. There are many examples world over where Air Forces have been instrumental in saving lives and alleviating further suffering.  This was exemplified recently when our brothers in Mozambique were faced with disaster after Cyclone Idai caused devastation in their Country,” said CS Defence.

Amb. Omamo noted the introduction of new technologies such as Unmanned Aerial Systems into the airspace that poses immense threat to aviation safety and security and challenged the Air Chiefs to use the forum to discuss ways to counter the technological challenges currently facing the continent.

The symposium is scheduled to end on Thursday 29th August 2019.
