Ranger Regiment and Amoured Brigade players battle it out during the CDF Cup finals.
CDF Cup tournament comprised of 11 teams namely Armored Brigade, Kenya Navy, Engineers Brigade, Moi Air Base, Kahawa Garrison, 6th Brigade, Nairobi Garrison, 4th Brigade, Ranger Regiment, Artillery Brigade and Laikipia Air Base. The tournament kicked off on Tue 15 Nov 2016 whereby four teams made it to the semi finals. Armoured Brigade beat Nairobi Garrison by a solitary goal while Ranger Regiment scored 2 against Moi Air Base 1. Play off for 3rd and 4th position was between Nairobi Garrison and Moi Air Base where Moi Air Base beat Nairobi by 4 goals to nil.
The finals between Armoured Brigade and Ranger Regiment was enticing keeping the fans on their heels as it was played on 23rd Nov 2016 at the 81 Tank Battalion field. In the first half both teams could not see each others goal. Ranger Regiment had the upper hand but their balls went wide. During the second half both teams kept their pressure high and on the 63rd minute Ranger Regiment took the upper hand after a mistake by Armoured defence and Senior Private Oliver Agwanda was at hand to hit the net. Armoured took advantage of Ranger Regiment celebrations and within four minutes Senior Private Wyclif Mosoti made it one all. The game had to go to extra time but it ended on a one all but Ranger Regiment were reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute of extra time after Private Furmat Fredric was red carded for false play. Penalties were taken and Armored lost their fourth one after the Ranger Regiment keeper saved it.
The Chief Guest Brigadier Aphaxard Kiugu, Commander Armored Brigade in his speech said Military sportsmen had demonstrated Patriotism, exemplary discipline and their demonstration of solidarity and esprit de corps goes along way in fostering brotherhood amongst the soldiers. He also thanked Ulinzi Stars for demonstrating high standard of football in the country and in the region and for impressive results in subsequent years. Ulinzi Stars will be representing the country in the confederation cup in 2017 having also produced the top scorer in the 2016 Kenya Premier League. He wished all the soldiers and their families Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2017.
Present during the occasion were Colonel Saif Rashid – Ranger Regiment Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Erick Oloo – Commanding Officer 78 Tank Battalion, Chairman Ulinzi Stars, Lieutenant Colonel Martin Makadis – Kenya Army Band and Lieutenant Colonel Epetet.
30 players were selected from all the teams that participated in the CDF tournament to form under 23 Ulinzi Warriors team to participate during the 2017 championship.
