Commanding Officer Kenya Navy Ship Jasiri Lieutenant Colonel Robert Birech awards Spte Adam Kamau of Kenya Navy as the host team emerged the best overall.
Kenya Navy are this year’s winners of the Chief of Defence Forces inter-brigade Taekwondo Championship which culminated at the Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe-Mombasa on Thursday 24th November 2016.
The three day extravaganza saw Kenya Navy scoop 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze medals to achieve the feat. Nairobi Finished second with 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals.
Last year’s winners Kahawa Garrison settled for 4th position with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 Bronze Medals. The 2016 CDF Cup Taekwondo Championship event brought together 10 Brigades across all the Military formations with a notable first time appearance from Ranger Regiment.
Moi Airbase was ranked third ahead of Kahawa Garrison, as Engineers, Artillery, Laikipia Air Base Brigades finished in fifth, sixth and seventh position respectively to carry home various awards and medals.
Individual accolades saw Corporal Edwin Lemiso Leshao from Moi Air Base outwit Senior Private Joseph Njihia from Nairobi 17-12 to bag Gold medal in the men’s Lightweight category in one of the outstanding showdowns of the event.
Team rivalry in the finals treated spectators to some exhilarating displays. In one of the major finals, heavy weight Corporal Bwire Okumu of Laikipia Airbase defeated Senior Private Mari Gitau of Kahawa Garrison to win Gold.
The women’s final pairings were equally volatile. Senior Private Irene Achieng inspired other Kahawa teammates with victory in the women’s heavyweight category after outshining Corporal Risper Mwangi of Moi Airbase to carry home Gold as the latter took silver.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Commanding Officer Kenya Navy Ship Jasiri Lieutenant Colonel Robert Birech said, “Taekwondo is one of the unarmed combative discipline sport that is essential to every soldier for self defence and physical fitness. I therefore would like to urge all Formations, Brigades and Units to encourage their personnel to make use of the qualified coaches and learn from their vast knowledge and experiences.”
Present during the event was the Director Africa Dream Taekwondo and Technical Advisor in the KDF Taekwondo Master Noh Seung Dae, Military Officers and services members from various military formations.
