Defence Cabinet Secretary Amb Raychelle Omamo and Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe on 24th December 2016 paid a surprise visit to troops in Kismayu. The visit which came a day before Christmas day was a festive season surprise to soldiers operating under Amisom in Kismayu. This marks the first visit by the Defence Cabinet Secretary to troops in Somalia but a routine visit by the Chief of the Defence Forces.

The Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Samson Mwathethe said that his visit to soldiers in Kismayu was first and foremost to meet and greet to his soldiers before the Christmas day and for them to know that they have not been forgotten while serving under Amisom. He noted that the year was ending well compared to its beginning where KDF experienced numerous challenges both in operations and other areas. “Terrorism is a global issue that is unexpected to end soon but KDF is working hard to ensure peace for Kenya and the region.” said General Mwathethe. He said that as Kenya enters the general election’s year, KDF is ready to ensure that there is peace and security nonetheless maintaining its apolitical value.

Amb Raychelle Omamo said that her visit to Kismayu was a thanks giving tour to the members of the Kenya Defence Forces for the great work they have done over the years. She noted that it’s through courage and dedication to fight for freedom far away from home. “The work that you do is strenuous and difficult, we appreciated it and don’t ever forget that.” Said Amb Omamo as she thanked the soldiers for standing up for the values of KDF and Kenya in general. She noted that soldiers don’t fight for themselves but fight for the principals that Kenya and the region is aspiring to attain and also for constitutional order. She concluded by thanking the Kenyan contingents in Somalia and in the region for being peace makers.

Amb. Omamo and Gen Mwathethe were flanked by senior Military Officers and members of the press.
