Catholic Priests renew their Priestly vows before Rt. Rev Salesius Mugambi, Bishop of the Archdiocese of Meru as Catholics Faithfuls keenly follow the proceedings at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defence Headquarters on Tuesday 11 April 2017.
The Catholic fraternity in the Kenya Defence Forces celebrated the 2017 Chrism Mass at a colorful ceremony that also marked the beginning of Easter celebrations on 11 April 2017 at the Saints Peter and Paul Church, Defence Headquarters Nairobi.
The ceremony was presided over by the Right ReverendSelasiusMugambi Bishop of Meru Catholic Diocese assisted by Military Principal Chaplain and Apostolate Administrator Colonel(Dr Reverend Father) Benjamin K Maswili.
In his sermon, Right ReverendMugambi reminded the faithful that priesthood is not a profession like any other but rather a calling where one stands for the sake of Christianity and his flock even if incapacitated. The former military Chaplain asked the Catholics to pray for their priests in order to gain strength and move on for the sake of the church. He said this after leading the military chaplains in renewing their vows. At the same time, the Bishop recollected his own experience of a several years ago when he served as a military Chaplain in the Nanyuki region before taking a break from the service after which he was called back to the Chaplaincy and sent to the diocese of Meru due to scarcity of priests created after the split of Embu diocese from the larger Meru diocese.
He however, reiterated his partial comeback after the retirement of Colonel Bishop Alfred Rotich from the service as an overseer of activities within the Defence Forces ordinariate after having been appointed by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The occasion is used to mark Chrism Mass in which blessing of the oils is applied on priests during priestly ordination on catechumens and oil for the sick is done. This is also the time during which catholic priests renew their vows taken at ordination, thus the occasion dubbed the ‘Priests Feast Day’.
In attendance was Major General Thomas Chepkuto, Officers, Service Members and military families mainly drawn from Nairobi units.
