The team was handed the flag by the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General Joseph Kasaon, who read a speech by the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Samson Mwathethe.
In his speech, the CDF noted that the EAC Military Games mark a major event in KDF sports calendar and like other events before, he was optimistic that the 2017 competition will continue to provide a forum in which the best of our Defence Forces teams compete.
Gen Mwathethe further commended the KDF team saying that over the years, it has performed exceedingly well in EAC Military Games.
During the last EAC Military Games and Cultural Events 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, from 05-20 August 2016, KDF was represented in Football, Netball, Basketball, Handball and Cross Country.
The CDF added that, “KDF teams’ performance in the last EAC Military Games was commendable and was crowned overall winner; they managed to win Gold in Football, Handball and Cross Country (men and women), Silver in Basketball and a Bronze in Netball (Women).”
Gen Mwathethe urged the team to interact with other contingents within EAC and explore other cultures while maintaining high standards of discipline.
Of particular importance, the CDF recognized the women Volley Ball team that will be participating for the first time in EAC Military Games. Previously only men’s handball team participated, however the EAC Secretariat replaced it with Women Volleyball in order to increase women participation.
This year women will participate in three sporting disciplines, namely Cross Country, Netball and Volleyball while their men counterparts will participate in Cross Country, Football and Basketball.
In conclusion, the CDF added that, “KDF recognizes the need for having comprehensive sports development programmes with the aim of producing elite world class sportsmen and women in the major disciplines while evoking the values of mass sports as an integral part of the physical fitness regime.”
