President Nkurunziza Opens the 11th Edition of EAC Military Games

The President of the Republic of Burundi His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza officially opened the 11th Edition of the East African Community (EAC) Military Games and Cultural Events 2017 in Bujumbura on Saturday, 26 August 2017 at the Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium.

The President termed the games as another moment where the soldiers showcase their great sportsmanship, solidarity and esprit de corps.

“It is a clear honour for Bujumbura and Burundi as a whole to host this 11th EAC Military Games and Cultural Events 2017. This is a clear indication that peace and security reign on the national territory, contrary to what bad-intentioned media and enemies of Burundi spread around the globe,” added the President.

President Nkurunziza further noted that the games are taking place at a time when Burundi is celebrating 10 years since joining the EAC.

“We have gained and contributed a lot ever since we joined (EAC). Full integration in all sectors is effectively taking shape and this includes the defence and Security Forces.”

The President commended his country for scooping the first position in a recently-held cultural and tourism exhibition held in Russia. He challenged the military too to emulate what their civilian counterparts were able to achieve.

The head of state gave the examples of EAC efforts in Somalia, Central African republic and the Great Lakes Region as ongoing collective efforts in search of peace in our region.

“At this point in time, allow me to extend my deep appreciation and gratitude to our Chiefs of the EAC Partner States Defence Forces for their constant and consistent dedication.”

In conclusion President Nkurunziza reiterated the commitment of his country to the integration process and full cooperation within all members of the EAC.

Later on the President kicked off the opening football match between the host and Kenya’s Ulinzi Stars at 1545hrs. The first half ended with a barren draw. On the 73rd minute, Enosh Ochieng stepped off the bench to net the sole goal against the host.

At the ceremony, Kenya was represented by the Defence Principal Secretary Saitoti Torome and the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lt Gen Joseph Kasaon.

This year’s events brings together over 500 participants who will compete in five disciplines; football, basketball, netball, volleyball and cross country. The teams are drawn from Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. South Sudan will be an observer for this year’s competition whereas Rwanda is not participating.

Last year’s competition were held in Rwanda with Kenya winning three gold, 2 silver and one bronze medals; emerging the best. The yearly event is geared towards enhancing solidarity and promoting cooperation through sports and culture among EAC countries. This year’s competition will end on 6th September.

The Kenyan team arrived on Thursday, 24 August and were received and welcomed by the Kenyan Ambassador to Burundi, HE Kenneth Vitisia.  Kenya’s Defence Attache to Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, Colonel Silvester Chirchir and Defence Liasion Officer at EAC Colonel Bernard Oluoch too received the delegation led by the Chef-De-Mission Brigadier Daniel Pyaban.
