Major Edwin Muta OIC DHQ CAU football team hands over the CDF Cup trophy to Lt. Col Noah Kimeli CO DHQ CAU.
On 30th November 2017, the Defence Head Quarters Camp Admin Unit (DHQ CAU) football team officially handed over the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup trophy to the commandant Department of Defence (DOD) CAU at the Ulinzi Gardens in DOD CAU. The team won the trophy on Friday 24th November 2017 in Mombasa at the Kenya Navy Base in Mtongwe where the tournament took place.
Commanding Officer (CO) DOD CAU Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Noah Kimeli received the trophy on behalf of the Commandant DOD CAU who could not grace the occasion because of other work commitments from the team’s Officer in Charge Major Edwin Muta. Speaking during the event, the CO DOD CAU Lt Col Kimeli praised the team for its exemplary performance during the tournament and promised the players that his office is throwing its full support behind the team.
The CO also stated that the service members need to be given the opportunity to showcase their talents in various sports and ensure that those talents are nurtured so that they can progress further in sports.
He further added that his office has given priority to all those who participate in sports to ensure that apart from sports, their military career progression is also taken care of. He noted the fact that sports usually consumes much of personnel’s time and most of them consequently stagnate in military career progression. Lt Col Kimeli asked the team manager to make follow ups so that everyone gets a chance do military courses to ensure promotion to next rank.
The CDF Cup football tournament took place between 14th and 24th of November 2017. The tourney featured teams from a number of Kenya Army formations, two teams from Kenya Air Force and two teams from Kenya Navy. Apart from the champions other teams included Manda Base, 2nd Brigade, Laikipia Air Base, Moi Air Base, Artillery Brigade, Armored Brigade, Ranger Regiment, Engineers Brigade, 4th brigade, Kahawa Garrison and the hosts Mtongwe Base.
The champions won their first match by a score of 1 – 0 against Ranger Regiment, they however lost 2-1 to 4th Brigade but later won the final group game 1 – 0 against Moi airbase topping the group with 6 points. In the quarter finals they beat Manda Base on penalties 5 – 4 after the match ended in one all draw after extra time. The champions sailed through the semi finals by beating 2nd Brigade team one (1) nil. In the final game they defeated Laikipia Air base team by 2 goals to one (1) to be crowned the champions of the CDF Cup football tournament.
The team also managed to produce the best goal keeper of the tournament Cpl Francis Ochieng of DHQ CAU while other two players Pte Oscar Inyika of JHC and Pte Zuberi Mohamed of Military police corps were selected to join Ulinzi football team.
The Ulinzi boxing team supported the champions throughout the tournament which started immediately after the end of the final leg of the Sportpesa Boxing Premier League in Mombasa where they emerged number two closely following the Kenya Police Boxing team in an event that was marred by officiating controversies in favour of the police. The Boxing team members however held their heads high after showcasing an exemplary performance in the league. The boxing team led by their OIC Lt Col Paul Mung’ori in a show of solidarity accompanied the DHQ CAU football team to the trophy handover.
