Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L) Major General Samuel Nandwa hands over the Kenyan flag to Engineers Brigade Commander Colonel Joseph Ouda- Chief De Mission of the KDF basketball team before the team proceeds to Congo Brazzaville for the 1st Edition of the African Military men’s Basketball Championships.
Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P& L) Major General Samuel Nandwa, officially handed over the National flag to the masculine military basketball team at the Defence Headquarters Camp Admin Unit (DHQ CAU), on Wednesday, 30th May 2018.
The basketball players have stepped up in their preparations as time draws closer for the Championships set to take place in Congo, Brazzaville from 10th to 22nd June 2018.
Speaking during the event, the ACDF P & L Major General Nandwa acknowledged the humble request to preside over the auspicious 1st Edition of the African Military men’s Basketball Championships 2018.
“I note that this is the first time the Championships is being organized by the Organization of Africa Military Sports in Africa (OSMA) in Brazzaville,Congo.Therefore,this Championships serves as an opportunity for you to gain experience and enhance your skills in the game”, the ACDF P& L noted.
He added that, the Kenya Defence Forces teams over the years have performed well in Regional, Continental and International Military games and urged them to ensure that the trend of good performance is maintained as this will earn the Country’s admiration and glory Worldwide.
“KDF recognizes the need for having comprehensive Sports development programmes aimed at producing elite World-class Sportsmen and women in the major disciplines while evoking the values of mass sports as an integral part of the physical fitness regime, In this case I wish to assure you that the Defence Forces Sports Control Board will continue to vigorously support sporting disciplines particularly in training so as to acquire the necessary exposure and specialized training needed for excellence”. The ACDF P& L said.
The team of 12 players drawn from various KDF formations is headed by the Chief De Mission Colonel Joseph Ouda Commander Engineers Brigade, the Officer in charge of the players Major John Wainaina and managed by Senior Sergeant Stephen Bartilol.The team reigned in last year’s East African Military Games in Burundi.
Ulinzi Warriors Basketball players will compete with different African Countries including, the hosts Congo (Brazzaville), Mali, Senegal, Ghana, Algeria and Angola.
Others present during the flag handover ceremony were, the Chief of Personnel Brigadier Martin Ong’oyi, Commanding Officer DHQ CAU Lieutenant Colonel Noah Kimeli, Senior Officers, Officers and Service Members.
