On the 10th July 2018, the Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe, received the US Army Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander, General Thomas D. Waldhauser who paid him a courtesy call at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi.
The visiting General arrived at Defence Headquarters shortly after 1100hrs and inspected a guard of honor mounted by the 7th battalion of the Kenya Rifles at Ulinzi House grounds.
After the colourful welcoming ceremony, the Marine Corps General, who is also the fourth Commander of the United States Africa command, went ahead to sign the distinguished visitors’ book before heading for a meeting with the Cabinet Secretary and Chief of the Defence Forces.
General Waldhauser bears the task of building US Defence capabilities, responding to crises, deterring and defeating transnational threats in order to advance U.S national interests. This is also aimed at promoting regional security, stability, and prosperity, all in concert with interagency and international partners.
The visit was boosted by the existing strong relations between the Kenyan Defence Forces and the USA Army mainly on fostering regional security.Kenya and the US have both committed time and resources in the fight against terrorism as well as the determination to bring sustainable peace to Somalia.
The visit by the U.S General has come at a time when the country is hosting the Global Anti-Piracy Conference at the United Nations office in Gigiri, Nairobi. The forum seeks to coordinate political, military, industry and non-governmental efforts to bring an end to piracy at the Coast of Somalia.
Present during the auspicious meeting was the Principal Secretary in the ministry of Defence, Torome Saitoti, US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Joseph Kasaon, and Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi among other top ministry and military officials.
