FLOODS EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO CIVIL AUTHORITY
On 17 Nov 066, a troop consisting of 1+39(Administration elements inclusive) from 10 Engineers Battalion were deployed at the Coast to assist in speedy erection of Bailey bridges in the areas affected by the floods which were being experienced. The exercise was conducted for a period of two weeks from 17 Nov to 02 Dec 06.
The following bridges were affected:
Kombeni Bridge in Kilifi District, Kaloleni Division.-The Bridge approaches were washed away leaving a gap 0f 2-6 ft and 135 ft on either side of the bridge.
Mrima Bridge in Kwale District.-The Bridge had been washed away leaving a gap of 60 Ft.The Bridge is along Kenya-Tanzania highway.
Horo-Horo Bridge along Kenya – Tanzania highway.-The bridge approaches were washed away leaving a gap of 90ft and 20 ft on either side of the existing culvert.
Mwachande Bridge in Ramisi.-The Bailey bridge was washed down stream leaving a gap of 130 ft.40% of the bridge parts were damaged.
Eshu bridge in Ramisi.-The Bailey bridge was washed down stream leaving a gap of 150 ft, 80% of the bridge parts were damaged.
Within the two weeks, the following were achieved:
On 20 Nov 06, a 90ft DS Bailey bridge was constructed at Mrima.
On 22 Nov 06, a diversion at Horo-Horo bridge was completed opening up, traffic along Kenya-Tanzania highway.
