ACADEMIC SCHOOLS
Currently, Defence Headquarters has sponsored four secondary and thirteen primary schools and several Nursery/Pre-Unit schools within its camps. The schools were established at various times and are meant to give quality education to children of military personnel and help to reduce transport costs for the soldiers. This was in recognition of the nature of duty of members of the Armed Forces.
Defence Headquarters has developed and maintained the physical facilities, provided equipment and textbooks in those institutions in collaboration with the parents. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issues policy guidelines on the management of the schools. They also supply textbooks, learning materials and undertake some level of maintenance of the physical facilities and equipment in the primary schools. The Teachers Service Commission provides the teaching staff in both the primary and secondary schools. The institutions are evenly distributed within the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya navy Barracks and Bases. A percentage of children from the civilian population are also admitted into the schools.
