ENVIRONMENT

The Kenya Armed Forces Environmental Soldier Programme is a tree seedlings planting and caring programme that was initially started as a Kenya Army Environmental Soldier Proramme in the year 2003. It was the brain child of the then Army Commander General JM Kianga who is now the Chief of the General Staff.

The vision of General Kianga and the Service Commanders has always been to ensure a greener and beautiful environment within the Military Barracks and Bases in Kenya. The programme promotes cohesiveness among the soldiers through individual and collective participation. Environmental experts are occasionally invited into the Barracks and Bases to educate the soldiers on the need to conserve trees and on the methods of planting and taking care of the seedlings.

The soldiers plant and take care of the seedlings until they are able to survive on their own. In excess of 1million seedlings have so far been planted and most of them have survived and doing well. Through the knowledge gained, the soldiers are already sensitizing and assisting the communities, where they come from, in planting trees.
