The Fourth Edition of the Kenya Defence Forces Inter Formations Championship Final Leg came to a spirited end after five (5) days of compelling matches amongst Kenyan military brigade teams, who tussled for a chance to be crowned the games champions at Nyayo Stadium Handball Court.
The competition was from the 10th to 14th July, 2017 and it highlighted teamwork, talent, and determination amongst the men and women’s teams from Lanet, Nanyuki, Marsabit, Isiolo, Embakasi, Engineers, Kahawa, Moi Air Base (MAB), and Mtongwe within diverse brigades in the Kenyan military.
The Men’s team had ten (10) team participating in the competition, whereby Artillery brigade took position one (1), Engineers brigade position two (2), 4th brigade position three (3), Kenya Navy position four (4), Kahawa garrison position five (5), Moi Air Base position six (6), 2nd brigade position seven (7), Armored brigade position eight (8), 6th brigade position nine (9) and Embakasi position ten (10).
The women’s team competition was among seven (7) teams whereby 2nd brigade took position one (1), Kahawa Garrison position two (2), Artillery brigade position three (3), Engineers position four (4), Armored brigade position five (5), Moi Air Base (MAB) position six (6) and 6th brigade position seven (7).
In the finals, the men’s match, Artillery brigade cliché to a narrow victory by winning 35-34 after defeating their long term rivals Engineers brigade and in the women’s match, 2nd brigade defeat Kahawa garrison by 29-21.
Artillery Brigade Commander and KDF’s Handball Chairman, Brigadier Isaac Njoroge Muchendu, speaking during the closing ceremony of the KDF Handball Inter Formations 4th Edition Championship Leg said that the competitions have been beyond successful because the participating teams have showcased great sportsmanship both in and outside the field.
“The games have really been tense as even I could not predict how it would end. I would constantly find myself jumping up every time a player was in the air diving in ready to smash a goal for his or her team. It was really amazing and I can confidently say that Ulinzi Handball Team is still the team to beat,” Brigadier Muchendu said.
Present during the event were KDF’s Officers, KDF sports official, Service Members, Civilian Staff and invited guests.
