33RD EDITION OF THE KENYA DEFENCE FORCES ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Julius Karangi addresses the sports men and women during Defence Forces Athletics Championships.

Thika Garrison is the overall winner of the 33rd edition of the Kenya Defence Forces Athletics Championships that was held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani from 10th to 12th May 2012.  They clinched 11 Gold medals, 4 silver medals and 4 Bronze medals.
Moi Air Base (MAB) took position two; a similar position that they held in last year’s 32nd edition with 7 Gold medals, 9 Silver medals and 4 Bronze medals while Kahawa Garrison settled for position 3 with 7 Gold medals,1 silver medal and 5 Bronze medals.
Last edition winner, Nanyuki Garrison managed to finish fourth with 5 Gold medals, 8 silver medals and 5 Bronze medals.
In the last individual awards, the best male and female, the Best Male Athlete prize went to Sergeant Vincent Mumo of Moi Air Base who scooped three gold medals and one silver medal while Victoress Best Female Athlete prize went to 82433 Spte Priscillar Nasimiyu of Isiolo team who scooped two Gold medals and one silver medal.
The championship saw old Kenya Defence Forces records broken. In Javelin women category,   Private Zeddy Cherotich broke the old record of 45.54M that has been in existence since 1996 making a new record of 48.45m while Private Caroline Cherotich made a new record of 3.15m and scooped a Gold medal.
One of the entertaining contests was in the tug-of-war where Lanet team scooped a Gold medal while Moi Air Base (MAB) and Laikipia Air Base (LAB) won Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
The Chief of Defence Forces General Julius Waweru Karangi who graced the event said that it’s discipline and love of the sport that has helped KDF personnel to make high strides in athletics and urged them to maintain the same standards. He also congratulated the champion of World indoor Track and Field Championships  and the event’s 1500m women Gold medalist Corporal Hellen Obiri and the current Boston Marathon champion  Corporal Sharon Cherop who finished 5000M women race as runners up.   
The championship was used to select athletes who will participate in the National Athletics Championship and Olympic trials that will be held sometime mid this year. The Championship attracted athletes from all the services of the Kenya Defence Forces.
Present during the event were Service Commanders, the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel and Logistics who is also Chairman of the Defence Forces Sports Control Board Major General Gordon Kihalangwa, General officers, Athletics Kenya Defence Forces Executive Committee Chairman Brigadier P K Magut, senior officers, officers among other invited guests.
