The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) took the 3rd position in the just concluded National Cross Country Championships which took place on 15th Feb 14 at Uhuru Gardens.
The competitions also doubled as trials for the selection of the team that will represent Kenya in the 3rd Edition of African Cross country slated to take place in Uganda on 16th March 14. Various teams took part in the competitions, including teams from KDF, Kenya Police Service, Kenya Prisons etc.
The derby kicked off at 8am with the junior women and men races (19years and below). The races preceded to the senior 8km women and 12km men races.
The 8km senior women race included six KDF Service Women. The 4 lap race was very competitive with our female soldiers fighting for the top positions which they unfortunately lost to Faith Chepng'etich from South Rift, who took the gold (26:09.7).
KDF settled for the fourth position through Private Jemmimah Chelagat of Moi Air Base (26:26.4) with Corporal Sharon Cherop of 81Tank Battalion finishing 9th position (26:44.3). They however took 3rd position in the overall team position.
In the final race, 12km senior men, KDF was also represented by six soldiers.
In the final team positions, KDF senior women and men teams clinched the third position overall. This is a big improvement from 2013 when the teams did not clinch any podium positions.
