The Kenya Defence Forces fraternity commemorated the International Nurses Day at both the Nairobi Regional Hospital (NRH) and Moi Air Base Aviation Hospital in Nairobi County. This celebration was commemorated under the global theme, “Our nurses, Our Future, Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies”. The theme focused on investment on nurses, which leads to a healthier population. Additionally, it focused on the nurses’ pivotal role in delivering primary care in all settings.
At NRH located in Kahawa Garrisson, the Chief Medical Officer, Brigadier James Mwika appreciated the nurses for the huge role they play in the continuum of healthcare. Further, he underscored the importance of mental welfare for the nurses who battle a lot more than illness.
“We need to be more innovative to get continuously better outcomes. Let us aim to push the level of healthcare to the highest level.” he said.
The Commandant NRH, Col Alex Nteere, underscored that nurses are critical thinkers who must observe and make critical decisions so as the patient outcome is at its best. He further encouraged the nurses to continue striving for the best as well as being abreast with information so as they can support their patients better.
The NRH Chief Nursing Officer, Col Hellen Kamotho, appreciated the vital role nurses play in the healthcare system. She further stated that the health and wellbeing of nurses is critical in providing a healthy and leading workforce which is key to improving economies.
“The nurses situated at NRH are competent and deeply dedicated to patient care. They have possessed exceptional teamwork and unwavering commitment to patient outcome.” she said.
A senior lecturer at Aga Khan University, Dr Joyce Jebet recognized the nurses and midwife’s dedication and compassion in improving patient outcomes and promoting their health and wellbeing. Additionally, she stated that nurses contribute heavily towards healthcare which plays a key role towards the health of individuals and the community.
“ We celebrate our nurses inorder to honour their sacrifice and service. It is also a day to build their pride and visibility for the profession.” She said.
Assistant professor at the Aga Khan University, Dr Irene Mageto spoke of promoting mental resilience among nurses. She stated that poor working environment can pose a risk to mental health. Additionally, she added that nurses need to prioritize their mental wellbeing in order to be in a better position to cater to the needs of the patients and themselves as well.
NRH also commended Warrant Officer 1 (WO1), Ndungu Wainaina for his exemplary job. He was recognised as an outstanding male nurse. Further, Mariakani Ward was also recognized as the best ward at the hospital.
At Moi Air Base Aviation Hospital the Chief of Air Force Medical Services (CAFMS), Colonel (Dr) Patrick Kimata presided over the event. In his remarks, he expressed his pride in joining the dedicated nurses of Moi Air Base in marking this special occasion. He also commended their selfless service and emphasized the critical role they play in sustaining health services within the Air Force. His presence and words of encouragement validated the importance of continued investment in nurses’ well-being and professional growth.
Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Colonel (Dr) Desmond Mang’oka, highlighted the significance of the celebration, noting that it was the first official observance of International Nurses Day at Moi Air Base Aviation Hospital. He applauded the tireless contributions of nurses and reminded them to prioritize their own health.
“Nurses should care for themselves as much as they care for others. There is therefore a need for self-care amidst the demanding nature of your duties”, he said.
Nurse consultant Ms Irene Ogongo echoed the same onto self-care and the mental health of nurses. Nurses were encouraged to foster positive thinking, and connect with nature for holistic well-being.
In honour of both events, there was a candle lighting ceremony to recognize Florence Nightingale who is remembered during this day. The nurses also took their oath which is a testament to their line of duty.
The events brought together medical personnel, nurses, and senior officers in a show of appreciation and solidarity for the nursing profession within the military healthcare system.
