REGIONAL COMMISSIONER LEADS OMU SECURITY MEETING

REGIONAL COMMISSIONER LEADS OMU SECURITY MEETING

In an effort to restore peace and stability in the troubled North Rift region, Regional Commissioner for Rift Valley, Dr. Abdi Mohamed, convened a high-level security meeting at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) sub-centre in Marigat, Baringo County. The meeting brought together senior security leadership, including the Baringo County Security and Intelligence Committee, KDF officers, and formed-up unit commanders under the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU).

This strategic forum served as a critical platform to assess the operational effectiveness and coordinate future security measures in response to escalating insecurity challenges, particularly cattle rustling and banditry in the region. The meeting focused on strengthening synergy, coordination, and communication among the various security agencies deployed in the region.

The Regional Commissioner called for unified inter-agency collaboration, describing it as indispensable in sealing off escape routes exploited by cattle rustlers and ensuring rapid, coordinated responses to criminal threats. He stressed that modern security challenges demand a shift toward technology-driven operations. In this regard, he urged all security units to fully embrace innovations such as drone surveillance, real-time data integration, and secure digital communication platforms to significantly boost intelligence gathering and response efficiency.

Dr. Mohamed further challenged all security agencies to optimize the use of available resources to reduce operational costs without compromising effectiveness. He highlighted the importance of community development initiatives in conflict-prone regions, advocating for the integration of soft power strategies such as irrigation schemes, borehole construction, promotion of education, and youth empowerment programs into a comprehensive, long-term peace-building framework.

Major Felix Makenzi, representing Commander Operation Maliza Uhalifu, Brigadier Joel Arimi, urged sub-county security teams to hold regular localized security meetings. He emphasized that these sessions should involve National Police Reservists (NPRs), the county security team, chiefs, and community representatives to encourage local solutions and facilitate early detection of emerging threats. Major Makenzi stressed that proactive engagement with local stakeholders would help ensure no issue goes unnoticed, adding that this grassroots approach would enhance vigilance and responsiveness.

As the meeting concluded, all attending security chiefs, pledged unwavering support to the mission and commended the commanders and officers leading the field operations for their exemplary service and dedication to the mission. Their bravery and strategic foresight in confronting banditry and criminal gangs were lauded as critical to stabilizing the region.
