KENYAN TROOPS IN MAVIVI DONATE BLOOD TO SUPPORT HOSPITALS IN EASTERN DRC

Kenyan peacekeepers deployed under MONUSCO in Mavivi recently took part in a blood donation drive organized by the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) to support local hospitals in addressing the shortage in their blood banks.

The Kenyan Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF), operating under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in DRC, joined the humanitarian effort to assist medical facilities in North Kivu, a region often strained by conflict-related emergencies.

Speaking during the blood drive which was spearheaded by medics from North Kivu’s Provincial Centre for Blood Transfusion, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, the KENQRF Commander, said the initiative aligns with MONUSCO’s mandate to protect civilians and support local communities.

“Our duty is not only to provide security but also to uplift the people we serve. Donating blood is a direct way to save lives,” Lt Col Seda stated.

Further, the KENQRF 4 Contingent Medical Officer, Captain (Dr) Mervyn Laititi applauded the troops for turning up in large numbers for the drive.

“One pint of donated blood can potentially save up to three lives.  Therefore, we are grateful to our personnel for heeding the call to save a life,” he said.

MONUSCO’s broader mission includes stabilizing eastern DRC, and such acts of solidarity help strengthen relations between peacekeepers and the local population. Local health authorities welcomed the support, noting that it would significantly boost their emergency response capacity.
