Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon Soipan Tuya on Wednesday evening discussed opportunities for expanding the strong Kenya-South Korea defence cooperation with the East Asian nation’s Ambassador to Kenya H.E KANG Hyung-shik at the envoy’s official residence in Nairobi.
The Cabinet Secretary and her host reviewed the prevailing security situation in the Horn of Africa and the Korean peninsula, exploring ways of how the two friendly nations can leverage their growing influence in the community of nations to foster lasting regional peace and stability.
Bilaterally, the Ministry of Defence, is particularly keen on partnering with South Korea in ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI); defense industries including ship-building; and maritime security among other areas or mutual interest.
Kenya and The Republic of Korea share a longstanding and proud history of bilateral relations dating back to 1964 when the East Asian country set up its first Embassy in Sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi.
Over the decades, diplomatic ties between Nairobi and Seoul have continued to flourish, largely driven by strengthening commercial ties, technology transfer, and people-to-people exchanges.
South Korean Embassy’s Counselor Dr LEE Woochul and Senior Researcher Dr KIM Yejoo were at the meeting also attended by KDF’s Chief of Strategic Policy and Plans Brig Ronald Makori.
