The Defence College of Health sciences (DCHS), a College of National Defence University-Kenya, held its second candle lighting and closing ceremony since it’s inauguration as a college under NDU-K. The event was held at the Defence Forces School of Music (DFSOM), Lang’ata Garrison.
The Vice Chancellor National Defence University-Kenya, Lt General David Tarus presided over the colourful ceremony, that saw at least 77 graduates drawn from the Kenya Defence Forces Tri services ( Kenya Army, Kenya Airforce and Kenya Navy) and National Intelligence Service, graduate with higher diploma and diploma honors.
The event marked successful completion of nursing courses from Four Nursing cohorts, inclusion of Higher Diploma in Perioparative Nursing, Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Anaesthesia), Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing and Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing. They will officially graduate in the next NDU-K graduation ceremony in November 2025.
To mark the significant transition, the graduates performed their traditional candle lighting and oath taking ceremony to abide by the nurses’ code of conduct and ethics. The candle-lighting ceremony is a meaningful tradition that honors the nursing profession’s rich history and heritage, while also acknowledging the graduates’ transition to becoming compassionate, skilled, and dedicated healthcare professionals.
In his remarks, Lt. Gen David Tarus congratulated the graduating cohorts for their selfless sacrifice, dedication and commitment all through the course that has seen them successfully earn their well-deserved nursing certification. He necessitated on the need for them to employ the skills and professionalism while executing their duties in the various KDF Medical establishments. ” It is my belief that the institution, inclusion of all the stakeholders, have fed and equipped you with the best learning experience, ranging from the lectures and resource personnel. You are the backbone of our medical establishments and we expect the best from you. Nursing requires empathy, commitment and essential qualities and I know you will deliver. ”
NDU-K Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Students Affairs, Professor Anne Muigai, acknowledged the collective efforts and collaboration from various stakeholders in gaining approval from regulatory bodies. She commended the partnership of various medical establishment that worked handy while running the course, among them, the Kenyatta National Hospital, Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Kenyatta University Referral hospital, Mathari Hospital, Karen hospital, Mbagathi hospital, Wangige community health hospital amongst others.
Other notable guests that graced the event were Director of Medical Services, Major General (Dr) George Nganga, NDU-K DVC Finance and Administration Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a, Chief Executive Officer Nurses Council of Kenya representative, KDF Medical Chiefs amongst other Senior Military officers.
