KENYA SIGNALS COMPANY TROOPS IN DRC HONOURED WITH UN MEDALS

The Kenya Signals Company 3 (KENSIG 3) troops serving under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), were on 2nd October 2025 awarded UN Service Medals in recognition of their professionalism, resilience, and exemplary service during their one-year tour of duty.

The medal parade at Force Headquarters, Goma, was presided over by MONUSCO Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Madam Vivian van de Perre, alongside Deputy Force Commander, Major General Khar Diouf.

Madam Vivian lauded the Kenyans for their dedication to duty and pointed out that the medals they were receiving today were more than decorations but are symbols of gratitude, respect, and recognition for the sacrifice they have made especially in light of the security situation in Goma which the troops have successfully endured.

“The work of a Signals Company often goes unnoticed, yet it forms the backbone of our mission. Without your expertise, reliability, and innovation, the command, control, and coordination of MONUSCO’s operations across this vast country would be extremely difficult. You have carried the UN flag with honour and distinction.” She said.

Maj Gen Diouf echoed the praise, noting that, “This ceremony marks the completion of a year of exemplary service. Your professionalism, discipline and ability to adapt have given Force Headquarters confidence in its command-and-control systems.”

KENSIG 3’s Officer Commanding, Major Stephen Otieno, described the day as “a milestone,” highlighting achievements such as installing CCTV in Goma, Beni and Bunia, supporting the Counter-Rocket Artillery and Mortar project in Beni, and sustaining communications during various MONUSCO operations geared towards protection of civilians. He also commended the Base Defence Platoon’s role in securing Force HQ and helping civilians during the Goma crisis.

The event featured a parade, cultural dances, and a VIP protection drill, with several Military Observers and Staff Officers from other contingents also decorated. Senior MONUSCO staff and dignitaries attended, reaffirming Kenya’s reputation as a reliable and professional troop-contributing nation committed to peace under the UN flag.
