The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command (CENTCOM), Major General John Nkoimo, on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, on Sunday, 9 November 2025, joined Commonwealth member states in marking the annual Remembrance Day at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Nairobi.
The solemn event, graced by Dr. Ed Barnett, the British Chargé d’Affaires in Kenya, is observed every second Sunday of November across the Commonwealth to honour the gallant men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the World Wars.
In his remarks, Dr. Barnett expressed gratitude to all those who attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and heroines, noting that their courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.
“It’s not just about memories, but also responsibilities. It reminds us that peace is not freely given but must be nurtured. Let us honour those who gave all in service. May we pause, reflect, and appreciate the sacrifices made,” he said.
Dr. Barnett also commended various organizations, including the Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA), for their continued support to veterans and widows of soldiers who served in past and present conflicts, including the World Wars.
The ceremony culminated in the laying of wreaths by representatives of Commonwealth states, senior KDF officers, retired service members, and World War veterans. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
A particularly moving moment came when veterans, proudly marching forward alongside their family members, laid wreaths in remembrance of their fallen comrades, an act that drew heartfelt applause from all in attendance.
Also present at the commemoration were foreign dignitaries, representatives of various Commonwealth nations, senior KDF officers, and serving members of the Defence Forces.
