The National Defence College delegation of course 28-2025/26 and the college faculty, led by the college Commandant Lieutenant General Juma Shee Mwinyikai, on 25 November 2025, conducted an educational visit to the Defence Headquarters. The visit provided course participants with an in-depth understanding of Kenya’s strategic defence framework and the evolving regional and global security environment.
During the visit, the delegation received a presentation titled “Kenya’s Perspective on National Security and Ministry of Defence/Kenya Defence Forces Role in Regional Security.” The presentation covered Kenya’s security landscape, national power elements, regional security dynamics, and the country’s multi-layered security approaches: common, comprehensive, and cooperative.
Cabinet Secretary for Defence Hon. Soipan Tuya, who graced the occasion, called on the course participants to actively apply the knowledge gained and highlighted the role of National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) and its Colleges such as NDC in equipping military officers both in Kenya and allied nations to address national, regional, and global security challenges. She also underscored the importance of safeguarding security and promoting global stability.
Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General John Omenda, encouraged the course participants to sharpen their intellectual capabilities and embrace inter-agency cooperation as central to strategic leadership. “In today’s complex security environment, focus is crucial,” he said. “We must stay grounded, stay alert, and ensure that intellect, industry, and diplomacy guide every decision we make as defence leaders.” He added, “No nation thrives by isolating itself. We must learn to co-exist, internally with our agencies, regionally with our neighbours, and globally through diplomacy.”
The visit concluded with a question and answer session, during which NDC course members discussed Kenya’s defence policy, regional security cooperation, climate-security linkages, cyber threats, and the future of defence industrialisation. Senior officers from the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) provided insights, highlighting the value of cross-agency collaboration in linking military education to national policy formulation and implementation.
Among those in attendance were Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans and Doctrine (ACDF OPD&T) Major General Frederick Leuria, Deputy Commandant Military (NDC) Major General Stephen Mutuku, Deputy Commandant Civil (NDC) Amb Simon Nabukwesi, General Officers, Senior officers, and faculty staff.
