Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5), serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), recently brought festive cheer to Dorica Orphanage on the outskirts of Oicha town. Led by the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Celestine Papa, the troops visited the facility to share Christmas celebrations with 22 orphaned children, all aged under 10 years, through the donation of foodstuffs and essential items.
During the visit, KENQRF clergy led prayers for the children and their caretakers, providing spiritual encouragement during the festive season. Lieutenant Colonel Papa emphasized that civilian protection extends beyond security operations to include community welfare, noting that such engagements are essential to the holistic success of peace support missions.
“We are grateful not only to provide security but also to address, within our limited capacity, some of the most pressing needs of the communities we serve,” he said, while thanking the orphanage management for welcoming the troops to join in the celebrations.
The facility manager, Mama Evelyne Saambili, expressed her appreciation to the Kenyan contingent for their generosity. She highlighted the challenges of running the orphanage without consistent support from well-wishers, adding that contributions from churches and humanitarian organizations remain vital to its continued operation.
Established in 1998, Dorica Orphanage currently cares for children orphaned by conflict or maternal deaths during childbirth, with the youngest resident being just one month old. Over the years, the institution has supported more than 500 children, offering a nurturing environment aimed at helping them grow into productive members of society.
The Christmas outreach not only brought joy to the children but also underscored the importance of collaborative support in sustaining community welfare institutions such as Dorica Orphanage.
