FOURTH TUFUZU INITIATIVE LAUNCHED TO EMPOWER MILITARY FAMILIES

The Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), in partnership with the Family Group Foundation, on 28 January 2026 commissioned the Fourth Construction Skills Development Training Programme dubbed “Tufuzu” at Embakasi Garrison. The commissioning ceremony was officiated by the Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Ketter marking a continued commitment to the welfare and empowerment of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) families.

‎The “Tufuzu” programme is structured to equip dependants of KDF Personnel with practical and market-ready skills like plumbing and electrical installation, which are aimed at enhancing employability, self-reliance and contribution to national development.

‎While officiating the ceremony, Lt Gen Ketter emphasised the importance of family empowerment as a critical pillar of operational effectiveness and force readiness.
“The operational effectiveness of KDF is reinforced when the welfare of our families is prioritised. Tufuzu is a deliberate investment in the future of our dependants, equipping them with skills that translate discipline into productivity,” he stated.

‎Commander Kenya Army further appreciated the partnership between MWAK and Family Bank Foundation highlighting on the importance of the Tufuzu initiative.
‎”This is a transformative initiative of profound national value, one that not only empowers military families but also strengthens communities, nurture youth potential and contributes directly to the socio-economic fabric of our nation,” said Lt Gen Ketter.

‎MWAK Chairperson Mrs. Grace Kahariri reaffirmed the association’s mandate to empower military families. “This programme reflects MWAK’s unwavering commitment to empowering dependants of service personnel. Through partnerships such as this with the Family Group Foundation, we continue to build resilience and opportunity within the military family,” said Mrs. Kahariri.

‎Mrs. Kahariri further urged the trainees to fully seize the opportunity presented by the Tufuzu programme noting that the skills they acquire would be a lasting asset long after the training period. She emphasised that plumbing and electrical skills are not only in high demand but are also practical trades that can open doors to employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

‎Speaking during the launch, Executive Director Family Group Foundation Mr. John Wamiri highlighted that the programme focuses on quality and sustainability. He emphasised on hands-on training, safety standards and competence-based assessment determined to ensure that every trainee exits the programme with skills that meet industry requirements, earn personal respect through hard work and are able to support their families.

The event was attended by the Embakasi Garrison Commander, Brigadier Jackson Lesaiyo; the Defence Headquarters Chief of Compensation and Welfare, Brigadier Rodah Mwasigwa; senior officers, MWAK representatives, and service members.
