NDC ADVANCES STRATEGIC PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION

Building on a series of successful engagements with U.S. defense institutions, the National Defence College (NDC) recently conducted a benchmarking visit to the United States Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The visit focused on enhancing strategic-level Professional Military Education (PME). NDC is a constituent college of the National Defence University–Kenya.

The engagement provided valuable insights into USAWC’s approach to the design and delivery of senior-level military education. Key discussions focused on curriculum architecture, faculty development, research integration, and the alignment of academic programs with national defence and security objectives.

Representing the Commandant, NDC, Lieutenant General Juma Mwinyikai, Colonel Henry Mwenemeru emphasized the importance of benchmarking with world-class institutions to maintain academic rigor. “Exposure to global best practices ensures that NDC remains responsive to emerging security challenges,” he noted, adding that such initiatives better prepare senior leaders for high-stakes strategic decision-making.

USAWC officials shared expertise on joint and interagency education, civil–military relations, and the integration of ethics into leadership development.

Both institutions also explored opportunities for future collaboration, including faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives, and continued dialogue on innovation in Professional Military Education.

The benchmarking visit reaffirms the strong defence education partnership between Kenya and the United States, underscoring a shared commitment to professional excellence and to advancing regional and global security.
