The Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA) team took part in this year’s Askari Appeal Golf Day held at Karen Country Club. The event was organised by British Legion Kenya and the Defence Forces Comrades Association (DEFOCA) to raise funds in support of Kenyan veterans who participated in World War II.
The annual tournament has continued to gain momentum, resulting in a successful fundraising drive aimed at supporting veterans’ medical care and other priority welfare needs.
Speaking during the event, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Daniel Opande underscored the vital role of the Askari Appeal Golf Day in positively impacting the lives of veterans and their surviving dependants.
“The event has brought together golf enthusiasts and supporters to stand with our veterans in the true spirit of camaraderie and philanthropy,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of golf as a sport that supports a smooth transition from active military service to retirement.
Senior Directing Staff (SDS) – Navy at the National Defence College (NDC), Major General Timothy Lekolool, noted that the initiative reinforces the enduring commitment to veterans’ welfare.
“This event serves as a show of gratitude, honouring the sacrifices made by our soldiers,” he remarked.
KDFGA Chairman, Brigadier Victor Kang’ete, observed that golf is particularly suited to the event, as it appeals to retired personnel due to its pace and nature of play, making it an ideal activity to support the transition from active duty to retirement.
As participants completed their rounds against the backdrop of Karen’s lush greens, one message stood out clearly: although the uniform may be retired, the enduring spirit of service, discipline, and unity within the Kenya Defence Forces remains unwavering.
