On Thursday, 19 February 2026, the General Officer Commanding Central Command (GOC CENTCOM), Major General John Nkoimo, paid an official visit to the 1st Canine Regiment (1 CAN) and the Disaster Response Battalion (DRB).
The visit kicked off with a tour of the DRB Tree Nursery, where he received a detailed brief on the Battalion’s environmental conservation initiatives geared towards supporting the national tree growing campaign and advancing sustainability efforts.
Major General John Nkoimo was subsequently taken through comprehensive briefs from both the Disaster Response Battalion and the 1st Canine Regiment on their current status and operational posture. The presentations covered key personnel matters, unit initiatives, training progress and overall preparedness, alongside a general overview of equipment and administrative serviceability. The briefs highlighted ongoing efforts by both units to strengthen capability, enhance efficiency and sustain mission readiness in support of the Kenya Defence Forces’ mandate.
At the 1st Canine Regiment lines, the GOC was taken through a static display and demonstration showcasing specialised canine capabilities in support of operations and disaster response missions. He commended the troops for their professionalism, discipline and dedication to duty, underscoring the critical role they play in enhancing force protection and rapid response operations.
