The Chair of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo and the Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans (DMV) Brigadier Moses Leriari accompanied by the Laikipia County Patron Major General (Rtd) Peter Waweru led military veterans in the launch of Laikipia County Military Veterans Chapter aimed at bringing services closer to the military personnel in the region on 19 February 2026.
The Military Veterans Act, Chapter 199A, is an Act of Parliament established for a regulatory and institutional framework for the management of military veterans’ affairs that includes the provision of benefits to veterans and their dependants, establish the Dependants’ Education Fund and also for networking purposes.
The establishment of the Laikipia County Military Veterans Chapter marks a significant milestone in the Ministry of Defence’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the veteran support network across the country. This county-based approach ensures that no veteran regardless of their location is left behind.
Major General (Rtd) Tumbo underscored the commitment of the military to provide welfare services, taking the veterans through the eligibility of dependants Education Fund which was established under military veteran act of 2022, highlighting that the Fund was designed to provide scholarships of the education of children of deceased military veterans.
“To the great veterans of Laikipia, I urge you to embrace this chapter wholeheartedly. It is your home, your platform and your collective strength. Let us rekindle the spirit of camaraderie the same spirit that carried us through challenging missions and demanding environments. Always work together, Support one another and Build programmes that will uplift the welfare of our families and our communities,” said Maj Gen (Rtd) Gumbo.
While addressing the veterans the Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans (DMV) Brigadier Moses Leriari underscored the roles of the county chapter stating that it will be a continuous registration of veterans and their dependants and facilities insurance of veterans’ ID and dependants permits medical support by use of SHA and DEFMIS and other medical cover under the new established Ulinzi Health Services Fund (UHSF).
“It is a great honour and privilege to join you today for this historic occasion the Official Launch of the Laikipia County Military Veterans Chapter. Today’s event is more than a ceremony, it is a powerful symbol of unity, dignity and renewed commitment to those who defended and safeguarded our nation. Though you are retired, you are certainly not tired. You have the ability to serve the nation and the great county of Laikipia in other noble capacities,” he said.
The ongoing launch of county veterans’ chapters represents a strategic shift towards decentralised, structured veteran support that acknowledges the sacrifices of Kenya’s military personnel. It also strengthens collaboration with county governments and community leaders, creating opportunities for veterans to engage in mentorship, economic activities, and social support networks within their counties.
