Defence Principal Secretary, Dr. Patrick Mariru accompanied by Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF) Lt. Gen. John Omenda appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations at Parliament Buildings to present the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Budget Estimates for the Financial Year 2026/27.
The session was chaired by Belgut Member of Parliament, Nelson Koech, who serves as the Committee Chairperson.
In his presentation, Dr. Mariru urged Members of the Committee to give due consideration to the Ministry’s budget proposals, emphasizing the critical role of adequate resourcing in enabling the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to effectively safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He outlined key policy priorities, ongoing projects, and flagship programmes currently under implementation, all aimed at strengthening defence capabilities and enhancing operational efficiency.
The VCDF on his part, reinforced the Ministry’s submissions, noting that sustained investment in modernization, capability enhancement, and force readiness remains indispensable to maintaining KDF’s operational effectiveness and long term strategic preparedness.
The appearance by both MOD and KDF leadership underscored the Ministry’s unified leadership in advancing its strategic mandate. The session was also attended by senior MoD officials, comprising both civilian and uniformed leadership, whose collective expertise continues to support the Ministry’s strategic objectives and commitment to national security.
