The three-day Kenya Army Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) Seminar held at Kenyatta Barracks, Gilgil, concluded with a closing ceremony presided over by Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Ketter. The seminar brought together RSMs from various formations and units to deliberate on leadership, discipline, and professional standards aimed at strengthening a mission-ready force.
In his remarks, Lt. Gen. Ketter commended the RSMs for their unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, standards, and soldier professionalism within the Kenya Army. He emphasized their critical role in enabling the Army to fulfil its mandate at the highest professional level.
He underscored the enduring responsibility of RSMs as guardians of the Kenya Army’s traditions and values, noting that Regimental Sergeant Majors remain the principal custodians of the regimental ethos. He added that their leadership is central to maintaining discipline, upholding standards, and strengthening the professionalism that defines the Kenya Army.
The Commander Kenya Army reiterated that the effectiveness of a professional army relies heavily on strong senior Non-Commissioned Officers such as RSMs, who mentor soldiers, foster unity, and uphold the highest standards of conduct. He described the RSMs as the “steel backbone” of the Kenya Army, noting that their influence at unit level remains indispensable in sustaining discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness. He further highlighted their vital role as a link between commanders and soldiers, ensuring that discipline, standards, and the regimental spirit are upheld across all ranks.
The seminar provided a platform for RSMs to exchange experiences, share best practices, and refine leadership approaches aimed at strengthening discipline, mentoring junior NCOs, and promoting ethical conduct across the Kenya Army.
