The Kenya Defence Forces Veterans Association has officially launched the Meru and Embu Veterans Chapters in a ceremony led by the Chairperson of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo.
The initiative aims to honour retired members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) while strengthening support systems for veterans under the national framework. The Meru Chapter will operate under the patronage of Major General (Rtd) Alphaxard Kiugu.
The establishment of the chapters aligns with the Kenya Military Veterans Act 2022, legislation designed to create structured support systems for retired service personnel and their dependants.
Speaking during the event, Major General (Rtd) Alphaxard Kiugu underscored the importance of establishing strong county-level structures that promote skills development, mentorship programmes, community service, and economic empowerment opportunities for veterans and their families.
He expressed optimism that the Meru Chapter will become a cornerstone for veteran empowerment, community mentorship, and continued civic contribution by retired soldiers.
In his remarks, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by men and women who served in the KDF and emphasised the need to support their welfare, empowerment, and reintegration into society. He noted that veterans possess valuable skills, leadership experience, and discipline that can significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
The Director of Military Veterans, Brigadier Moses Leriari, reaffirmed the KDF leadership’s commitment to ensuring that retired personnel live dignified lives after their years of active military service.
Embu Governor, Hon. Cecily Mbarire, who served as the Chief Guest at the Embu launch, pledged her administration’s support for veterans, noting that the county government would tap into their vast experience and expertise.
The Embu Chapter Chairman, Major General (Rtd) Cyrus Gichovi, expressed gratitude to the KDF and the Ministry of Defence for establishing the chapter, noting that it will play a key role in addressing the challenges faced by retired soldiers.
The representative of the Meru County Commissioner, James Mbutu, also pledged government support for the chapter and promised assistance in securing land for the construction of an office.
With the launch of the Meru and Embu Chapters, the two regions join a growing nationwide effort to ensure that those who once defended the country are honoured, supported, and actively integrated into local development initiatives.
