NURTURING NATURE FOR A BETTER FUTURE

The Kenya Defence Forces’ Military Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) carried out a tree-planting exercise along the Kiu River banks at Kahawa Sukari to commemorate the International Day of Action for Rivers.

During the event, the unit planted 9,000 trees to help conserve the river ecosystem and restore the riparian environment. Led by the Commanding Officer A K Onyamo, service personnel also engaged students from Ndiini Primary School and Uhuru Kenyatta Secondary School, sensitizing them on the value of tree planting and environmental conservation.

On the same platform, the Principal of the Uhuru Kenyatta Secondary School Ms Kiama applauded the drive terming it as crucial for fostering environmental stewardship, mitigating climate change, and providing hands-on STEM learning, while instilling long-term responsibility.

This initiative forms part of the Kenya Defence Forces’ Environmental Soldier Programme, which encourages service members to actively participate in protecting the environment and managing natural resources sustainably.

Also in partnership with the Kenya Defence Forces was Greens of Africa Foundation, KIU River Water Resource Authority, and the Visionarians Youth Group.
