The Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM), Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Bwana Haji Omar, on 16 and 17 March 2026 delivered a series of lectures to Kenya Navy service members, focusing on discipline, welfare, financial responsibility and career preparedness.
The DFSM addressed Warrant Officers, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and NCOs, with his engagements aimed at strengthening professional conduct and personal accountability across the ranks.
During his address the DFSM spoke candidly about his journey through the ranks, reminding sailors that his experience mirrors their own path.
“I stand before you not as a guest but as a product of this Navy,” he said, reflecting on his progression from the lowest enlisted rank to the highest enlisted appointment within the Kenya Defence Forces.
He attributed his success to discipline, patience, faith and hard work, encouraging personnel to remain committed to their duties and personal growth.
On discipline, he described it as the foundation of military effectiveness, stressing that it extends beyond enforcement to include self-control and doing what is right even in the absence of supervision. He urged personnel to maintain high standards in conduct, grooming, physical fitness and adherence to operational protocols.
He also cautioned against the misuse of social media, noting that careless online activity could compromise operational security and damage the image of the Kenya Navy.
Addressing morale, the DFSM noted that although intangible, it plays a decisive role in mission success. He encouraged senior NCOs to mentor their juniors, foster teamwork and adopt a problem-solving mindset to strengthen unit cohesion.
On welfare, he emphasized the importance of personal well-being and a stable family life, noting that unresolved domestic challenges can negatively affect operational performance. He reiterated that welfare remains a shared responsibility between the institution and individual service members.
Financial discipline featured prominently in his message, which he described as a critical yet often overlooked aspect of military life. He warned that poor financial decisions can derail otherwise promising careers, urging sailors to live within their means, avoid unnecessary expenditure and embrace structured financial planning.
He further advised personnel to begin preparing for retirement early by investing in education, acquiring relevant skills and making sound financial decisions to secure a stable future beyond active service.
In a separate engagement, the DFSM held a focused session with Warrant Officers, providing a platform for open dialogue on leadership challenges and opportunities. The forum explored ways to strengthen collaboration with command structures, enhance mentorship of junior NCOs and build a more cohesive and disciplined NCO cadre within the Navy.
The DFSM called on all ranks to uphold the values and reputation of the Kenya Navy through discipline, integrity and professionalism.
“Stand firm. Protect your name. Protect your uniform. Protect the reputation of the Kenya Navy,” he urged.
The engagement forms part of ongoing initiatives within the Kenya Defence Forces aimed at strengthening leadership, enhancing service member welfare and reinforcing the pivotal role of the NCO cadre in sustaining operational effectiveness.
