KDF CROWNED 2026 NATIONAL OPEN BOXING CHAMPIONS

The Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) has been crowned the 2026 National Open Boxing Champions following a gruelling four-day tournament held at Kaloleni Social Hall in Nairobi. The championship attracted 18 teams from across the country.

DEFABA fielded 17 boxers, with 12 advancing to the finals—comprising nine men and three women. Of these finalists, nine pugilists secured gold medals in their respective weight categories.

The team delivered a dominant performance throughout the tournament, outclassing the defending champions, the National Police Service. Their control, discipline, and tactical superiority earned them admiration from fans and firmly established them as the standout team of the competition.

The gold medalists were:

• Middleweight Sgt Edwin Okongo

• Flyweight Cpl Veronica Mbithe

• Welterweight LCpl Fred Omondi

• Featherweight LCpl Pauline Chege

• Bantamweight Spte Denis Muthama

• Light Heavyweight Spte Robert Okaka

• Light Middleweight Spte Alvine Odour

• Light Welterweight Spte Friza Asiko

• Flyweight Civ Emmanuel Chondo

Final team standings after the tournament were as follows: DEFABA – 25 points; National Police Service – 22 points; Kasarani Club – 8 points; Kisumu Club – 8 points; and Kenya Prisons – 6 points, among others.

As the team begins preparations for the first leg of the National League, scheduled for mid-May in Nakuru, this victory serves as a strong morale booster. The impressive performance further underscores the continued strength and competitiveness of KDF boxers on the national stage.
