FAITH IN ACTION: PEACEKEEPERS’ LENTEN SACRIFICE STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY RESILIENCE IN EASTERN DRC

In the theatre of peace support operations, the true measure of impact often extends beyond the primary responsibilities. For peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), a recent act of faith-driven generosity has illustrated how compassion and security can work hand in hand to rebuild communities.

Peacekeepers drawn from Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) and Tanzania’s Quick Reaction Force (TANZQRF) demonstrated this dual commitment during a joint worship service at Mbau Parish, situated near their Mavivi Permanent Operating Base. Their presence not only symbolized solidarity with local worshippers but also reinforced the broader humanitarian dimension of peacekeeping.

Rooted in the spirit of the Lenten season, the initiative saw the soldiers voluntarily commit to a daily sacrifice—setting aside personal funds each for forty days. This collective effort culminated in a meaningful contribution toward the parish’s urgent need for mobility for the church. For years, limited mobility has constrained clergy and christians from reaching remote congregations scattered across the region’s challenging terrain. The donation, formally presented during the service, marked a decisive step toward restoring consistent pastoral outreach and strengthening spiritual support networks.

The Parish in-charge, Father Dominic Kalepi, hailed the gesture as a profound expression of lived faith and partnership. He noted that the improving security environment—largely attributed to MONUSCO’s sustained presence—has enabled communities to reclaim their freedom of worship. This marks a significant shift from the past, when insecurity severely restricted religious life. He recalled earlier periods of instability, including the 2012 abduction of three parish priests by armed elements, underscoring the transformation from a climate of fear to one of cautious stability.

While MONUSCO’s core mandate remains firmly anchored in civilian protection and conflict stabilization, such initiatives reveal the deeper human connections that underpin lasting peace. By responding to a practical community need, the peacekeepers have reinforced trust, enhanced local engagement, and demonstrated that operational effectiveness is amplified when matched with empathy.

In Mbau, the convergence of faith, sacrifice, and service is redefining the role of peacekeepers—not only as guardians of security, but as catalysts for hope and enduring community resilience.
