ENHANCING DEFENCE COOPERATION ACROSS EAST AFRICA COMMUNITY

Strengthening regional security and cooperation took center stage as the Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Regional Integration, chaired by Nominated Member of Parliament, Hon. Irene Mayaka, to outline Kenya’s military engagements and programs with partner states of the East African Community (EAC).

The session provided an opportunity to showcase the extent of joint military initiatives that continue to reinforce peace, stability, and collective security across the region. Key areas of focus included participation in Peace Support Operations, coordinated border security initiatives, civil-military cooperation efforts, and the advancement of Defence industry partnerships among EAC member states. The discussions also highlighted the role of sporting engagements such as the EAC Games in fostering camaraderie and unity among regional defence forces.

In his submission, Dr. Mariru underscored the strategic importance of these programmes, describing them as a foundational pillar for regional integration. He noted that by prioritizing collective security, partner states are not only defending their borders but also safeguarding the social and economic prosperity of the entire East African region.

Dr. Mariru further emphasized that initiatives such as Peace Support Operations and Border Security Initiatives go beyond tactical military actions, serving as critical safeguards for the region’s shared economic future.

These collaborative efforts reflect a shared commitment by EAC partner states to address evolving security challenges through coordinated strategies, capacity building, and mutual support. Emphasis was placed on strengthening integration among forces, enhancing information sharing, and promoting sustainable Defence capabilities across the region.

The engagement reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s dedication to deepening regional integration through defence diplomacy and strategic partnerships that contribute to long-term peace and development within the East African Community.

Dr. Mariru was accompanied by the Chief of Operations at the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier Stephen Huria, alongside other senior officers.
