FROM FEAR TO FRIENDSHIP

FROM FEAR TO FRIENDSHIP

Four months ago, when Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force first arrived in Mantumbi, 35 kilometers north of their Mavivi base, the welcome was reserved, to say the least. Plagued by killings, extortion and daily disruptions from armed groups, the town’s residents had grown deeply sceptical. Trust in any uniformed presence was fragile, replaced by fear and distress.

But sustained day and night patrols by Kenyan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) gradually restored sanity. Locals resumed farming, subsistence trade and schooling with growing confidence. That transformation found its most symbolic expression on a cloudy Sunday afternoon on May 3rd, when Mantumbi’s Youth President, Mr. Dieudomne Kambale, invited the Quick Reaction Force for a friendly football match.

Locals left their homes and gathered at Mantumbi Stadium. What unfolded was not merely a game but a celebration of milestones in peace restoration. The home team dominated early, scoring twice before halftime with swift, coordinated attacks. Their fans erupted, sensing victory against the peacekeepers.

In the second half, Mantumbi FC continued their momentum, adding two more goals despite the Kenyan force’s improved endurance and a brief rally that saw the QRF find the net twice. The match ended 4–2 in favor of Mantumbi FC, but the final score mattered less than the spirit of joy, friendliness and brotherhood that characterized the engagement.

While the match played out, Quick Reaction Force medics treated local residents and delivered health talks in a region where health infrastructure remains underdeveloped. At the final whistle, the peacekeepers donated sporting kits to the players.

This engagement was more than a gesture. In areas like Mbau, Oicha and Mantumbi, trust is the currency of effective peacekeeping. Without it, patrols face silence instead of cooperation. With it, locals share information, report threats and reclaim normal life. The football match proved that when peacekeepers move beyond armored vehicles and into community spaces, suspicion gives way to partnership.

Looking forward, the Kenyan Quick Reaction Force commits to sustaining these gains by enhancing operations. In a mission where armed groups exploit local mistrust, a match, some medical talk, coupled with a combat patrol, are all essential gestures to MONUSCO’s mandate implementation.
