VALIDATING DREAMS THROUGH NAVAL EDUCATION

As maritime security continues to grow in strategic importance within the region, initiatives that expose young learners to the maritime domain are becoming increasingly vital in shaping future generations of innovators, leaders and security professionals. Educational engagements between the Kenya Navy and learning institutions not only strengthen community relations, but also inspire students to explore opportunities within the maritime and defence sectors.

In line with this commitment, students from SOS Children’s Village School, Mombasa, visited Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe on 26 February 2026 for an educational tour designed to deepen their understanding of naval operations, maritime security and professional military training.

The visit provided the learners with a rare firsthand experience of the Kenya Navy’s operational environment and its critical role in safeguarding Kenya’s territorial waters, maritime resources and national interests. Through practical demonstrations and interactions with naval personnel, the students gained valuable insight into the professionalism, discipline and technical expertise required in naval service.

During the tour, the students visited the Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC), where they were introduced to the Full Mission Bridge Simulator (FMBS), a state-of-the-art maritime training facility used to train Kenya Navy officers, sailors and personnel from other maritime agencies through simulated ship operations. The facility demonstrated the Kenya Navy’s continued investment in modern training technologies aimed at enhancing operational preparedness and maritime safety.

The learners also toured the Damage Control Unit (DCU), where they were exposed to emergency response procedures and onboard safety measures employed during naval operations at sea. The practical demonstrations offered the students a deeper appreciation of the complexities of maritime operations and the importance of preparedness in ensuring mission success and crew safety.

The educational experience culminated with a visit to the Kenya Navy Fleet (KNF), where the students boarded Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) SHUPAVU and explored the vessel’s operational capabilities. Engagements with naval personnel allowed the learners to better understand life at sea, maritime surveillance operations and the broader role played by the Kenya Navy in regional and national security.

Teachers accompanying the students commended the Kenya Navy for providing an informative and inspiring learning experience, noting that the tour had broadened the learners’ perspectives on career opportunities within the maritime and defence sectors.

The initiative further underscored the Kenya Navy’s commitment to nurturing stronger community ties while investing in future generations through educational outreach programmes that promote awareness, patriotism and interest in maritime affairs.
