Sport remains a powerful platform for developing discipline, resilience, teamwork and leadership while fostering social cohesion and national unity. Beyond competition, sporting events provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to interact, build mutual respect and pursue excellence in an environment that promotes healthy lifestyles and positive values.

Reflecting this enduring role of sport, the Kenya Navy, in partnership with the Mombasa County Taekwondo Association, successfully organized the Commander Kenya Navy Open Taekwondo Championship 2026 at Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe.

The championship brought together taekwondo athletes from various Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) formations and civilian clubs, creating a dynamic platform for competitors to showcase their skills, determination and commitment to the sport. The event also demonstrated the growing collaboration between the military and civilian sporting institutions in nurturing talent and advancing sporting excellence.

The championship was officiated by the Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Brigadier William Kiprotich, who highlighted the significant contribution of sport to personal growth and national development. He noted that sporting activities cultivate essential qualities such as physical fitness, mental resilience, discipline, teamwork and leadership, attributes that are equally valuable in military service and everyday life.

“Sport remains a key pillar in building physical fitness, mental strength, discipline, teamwork and leadership. These attributes are essential not only in military service but also in everyday life, where perseverance, integrity and commitment are critical to success,” said Brigadier Kiprotich.

He further observed that the championship reflects the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to promoting sporting excellence while strengthening engagement and cooperation with the civilian community.

Throughout the tournament, athletes competed in various taekwondo categories, delivering impressive performances characterized by technical skill, agility, determination and exemplary sportsmanship. The high standard of competition reflected the participants’ dedication, rigorous training and passion for the sport.

At the conclusion of the championship, Nairobi Regional Taekwondo Club emerged as the overall winner, with Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe securing second place and the Directorate of Defence finishing third.

Beyond the medals and rankings, the championship reinforced the unifying power of sport by creating opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials and members of the military fraternity to build lasting friendships, strengthen professional networks and foster mutual respect. Such initiatives continue to demonstrate how sport can serve as an effective tool for nurturing talent, promoting healthy competition and strengthening the bonds between the Kenya Defence Forces and the communities they serve.
