Military veterans remain a key part of the nation’s defence heritage, having dedicated their lives to safeguarding Kenya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests. As the Government strengthens support structures for retired service personnel, sustained outreach programmes continue to play a vital role in keeping veterans informed, empowered, and connected to available services.
In this regard, the Directorate of Military Veterans (DMV) conducted an outreach programme for military veterans in Isiolo County, bringing together retired Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel for a forum aimed at enhancing awareness of the Military Veterans Act and the welfare programmes administered by the Directorate. The engagement provided a platform for veterans to interact directly with officials, seek clarification on welfare matters, and deepen their understanding of available post-retirement support systems.
A key highlight of the programme was a sensitisation session on the Military Veterans Act, outlining the rights, recognition, and benefits accorded to veterans. Participants were also taken through the registration process, access to support programmes, and the role of the Directorate in addressing their needs and concerns. The discussions underscored the importance of formal registration in facilitating access to government services and ensuring effective integration into the veterans’ support framework.
The programme was chaired by Director, Brigadier Moses Leriari, who reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to veterans’ wellbeing and emphasised the importance of continuous engagement. He noted that military service extends beyond active duty and called for the preservation of the dignity and contribution of veterans within society.
Also in attendance were Retired Brigadier (Rtd) Philip Lepakiyo, Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Karanja, and other senior retired officers, whose participation reflected the strong bond of camaraderie among former servicemen and women and reinforced collective efforts in advancing veterans’ welfare.
The outreach reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Kenya and the Kenya Defence Forces to supporting military veterans and preserving their legacy of service. It further highlighted the importance of sustained engagement in ensuring that those who once safeguarded the nation continue to be recognised, supported, and valued members of society.
